Existing Methods in the Metal Finishing Process
📆 2021-02-22

Metal finishing is the final step in the process used to provide aesthetics and protection. It is also used for reducing surface roughness and cleaning of metals beyond the capability of machining operations for the sealed parts. Different types of metal finishing processes are used for various purposes. There are several finishing methods including :
-
Plating
Metal plating uses chemical immersion to coat or change the surface of the substrate with a thin metal layer such as zinc, nickel, cadmium, or chromium. The electric plating method generates an electric current to coat the substrate, whereas the electroplating method uses an autocatalytic process in which the substrate catalyzes the reaction. Metallic plating can improve product durability, corrosion resistance, surface friction and exterior appearance.
-
Brushing
Unlike plating, metal finishing with a brush is an effective method of removing surface imperfections. This finishing machine creates a uniform parallel grain surface texture to smooth out the product exterior. An abrasive belt or wire brush is usually used to achieve this effect. In addition, brushing is used to remove scale and grit generated by some welding operations from metal surfaces.
-
Polishing
This abrasive method is used to reduce the surface roughness of the metal after machining. Roughness is measured in micro-inches by the most precise machining processes (reaming, broaching). Precision or fine grinding can reduce surface roughness using abrasive or point mounted wheels. In addition, abrasive powders are used in combination with leather or felt wheels for polishing
-
Coating
paints are available for harsh environments, such as anti-fouling paints. Powder coating applies a decorative finish similar to paint but with better staying power. This process involves UV or heat curing of a dry thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer powder onto the metal to produce a textured, matte, or glossy finish.
Conclusion
The following is a brief discussion of several metal finishing methods. For more information about what methods are used at Duta Laserindo Metal, you can view our guide and contact us to see details of a specific product or process of sheet metal forming.
